The actress has died, aged 80
TV and movie actress Eileen Brennan has lost her battle with bladder cancer at the age of 80, with reports confirming the actress has died at her home in California.
Eileen starred in major movies including The Last Picture Show, Clue and Private Benjamin with the star passing away at her home in Burbank, California on Sunday according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The actress' family have since released a statement: "Our family is so grateful for the outpouring of love and respect for Eileen. She was funny and caring and truly one of a kind. Her strength and love will never be forgotten. She will be greatly missed by all of us."
She was best known for her portrayal of Captain Doreen Lewis in 1980's film Private Benjamin, which saw the actress nominated for an Oscar.

Eileen will also be remembered for her TV portfolio, with the actress appearing in beloved US shows like All in the Family. She also reprised her Private Benjamin role in the TV adaptation of of the film and won a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award for her performance.
The actress was diagnosed with breast cancer some years ago and subsequently recovered from the disease. She told America's Globe magazine last year that she was ready to die following several near death experiences throughout her life:

"I've had a wonderful, simply wonderful life and career, and I'm also at a point where leaving this place behind is just fine and dandy with me... I'm ready any time..."
"Just let it be quick and painless," she said.
