Tollywood mourns for Rita Koiral

She could memorise seven to eight pages of a script in a jiffy. One glance at the script and she could remember her dialogue plus her co-actor’s to the letter. She would laugh and crack jokes. But once the director used to say ‘action’, she used to close her eyes and say one word — ‘cholo!’ And the rest used to be magic in front of the camera. That was Rita Koiral, 59, a versatile actor and an excellent dubbing artiste, who passed away on Sunday morning after an illness. She acted in innumerable serials, films, telefilms and was also an announcer at Doordarshan. She was a workaholic and used to work in three to four serials in a day. Dance was her passion and she had her own dance school too, where she used to devote most of her time.
Arindam Sil, who played her husband in Prabhat Roy’s Lathi, still can’t come to terms with the fact that Rita is no more. “I spoke to her just a few days back and that infectious smile is haunting me. She was an actor par excellence. I feel comedy and negative roles are the two most difficult genres for an actor. But for Rita, it was easy. She worked in my telefilm Swade Ahladey.

In most of the serials Manami Ghosh has acted,Rita used to play her mother or mother-in-law.“Industry people used to pull our leg saying we are a mother-daughter duo package. Be it Ek Akasher Niche, Kon Se Alor Swapno Niye, Binni Dhanner Khoy or Sonar Horin, we have acted together in many serials. Ritadi used to love spicy food and fish was her favourite. She loved macher laja’r jhal and bhaat for lunch and all the production boys used to keep that special piece of fish for her. From director to production boys, she was loved by all on the sets,” said Manami.
Rita was a constant in all the hit serials directed by Agnidev Chatterjee. “She was more family than an actress to me. I used to call her didi.Every year she used to tie me a rakhi. We both were cleanliness freaks and people used to laugh at us for that,” said Agnidev.

Anjan Dutt feels Rita was an underrated actor and needed more exposure than what she got. “I am much older than Rita and this news of her untimely death makes me go into a shell. She was a talented actress and the role she essayed in Dutta Vs. Dutta was complex. But the way she enacted it was brilliant. I told her that her acting reminded me of my childhood days and my memories of my mother. But I feel more directors should have cast her in meaningful roles,” said Anjan.

Rita was also working in Rakhi Bandhan, a megaserial where she used to play the negative character of Molina Chatterjee.Piyali Basu, who plays mother to the kids Krittika and Soham in Rakhi Bandhan with Molina Chatterjee as her sisterin-law, said, “We went to north Bengal for shooting while Ritadi, due to her illness, was shooting here in Kolkata with the second unit. From there we heard she was not keeping well. Her character would be rude to the kids on screen. But after every such shot, she used to hug them and say “Ota michimichi!” said Piyali.

Rita Koiral was diagnosed with liver cancer recently and continued working despite the many challenges. Her death was mourned by CM Mamata Banerjee on Twitter.Rita is survived by her husband and daughter.
