The first champion of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has died.
Richard "Dick" Wilmarth was a musher, miner and trapper from Red Devil, a tiny town on the Kuskokwim River.
Wilmarth won the first running of the Iditarod in 1973 in a time of 20 days, 49 minutes, 41 seconds. The first race was to be the only time Wilmarth would run Iditarod.
This is a developing story and will be updated
