Sweden based filmmaker and theatre star Kudzai Chimbaira has died.
The news filtered onto the Zimbabwe arts scene on Monday with prominent fellow filmmaker Rufaro Kaseke one of the first to post on his personal Facebook wall:
“Feeling gutted. The film, theatre and the entire Zimbabwean arts family has lost a gem. Kudzai Chimbaira has gone to be with the Lord. We are gutted but we Thank God for the time she had with us.
Condolences began to pour in from different players in the industry as the news gathered momentum.
Chimbaira was trained by Theory X and was the recipient of various awards including Best Theatre Actress at Nama 2008, Best Actress for Ziff 2007 and Best Actress for Carthage Film Festival in Tunisia. She directed a play titled Silent Words for Hifa 2008 before relocating to Sweden.
There she continued on her path in theatre before forming her own theatre company, Integrationsteatern.
While based there she often made trips to Zimbabwe conducting workshops for capacity building the theatre and film industry in Zimbabwe.
She will be dearly missed.
For us, her detailed coverage of the first ever performance by Mokoomba at the Apollo in New York will always be a moment that. You can read that here.
We do not yet understand the loss, but we are pained.
