Moni Maker, 2-time trotter of the year, dies at 21

The U.S. Trotting Association said the bay mare died Friday at New Bolton Center, the veterinary hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Moni Maker regularly beat males and was the top trotter in 1998 and 1999. She won $5.5 million and 67 of 109 starts in six seasons of racing in North America and Europe.
In 2000, in her final start, she was ridden, not driven, by Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone. Moni Maker broke the world record for trotting under saddle in 1:54.1, a mark that still stands.
