A former TV meteorologist, she appeared in 'The Champ' and on 'The New Howdy Doody Show.'
Micki Varro, an actress and jazz singer with credits including The Champ, Hart to Hart and The New Howdy Doody Show, has died. She was 75.
Varro died Jan. 16 of cardiac arrest in Palm Court, Florida, after a flu-like illness, her daughter, Heidi Varro Dinneen, announced.
A bubbly redhead with big blue eyes, Varro was a meteorologist and anchor in the 1970s on WPLG-TV, the ABC affiliate in Miami, and later appeared in more than 200 national TV commercials.
She starred on stages in New York, Los Angeles and Florida in productions of Voices, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Barefoot in the Park and The Prisoner of Second Avenue.
As a singer, she often appeared with husband Johnny Varro, a jazz pianist, bandleader and arranger, at music festivals around the world, and she performed a one-woman show in Miami Beach nightclubs and at other venues.
On The New Howdy Doody Show in the 1970s, Varro's characters included Aunt Prunella, Manya and Glory Grits. She also appeared on television in Mama's Family, Matt Houston, It's a Living and Capitol.
In addition to The Champ (1979), her film résumé included Joe Panther (1976), Airport '77 and Reform School Girls (1986).
Varro had lived for the past 16 years in Palm Harbor, where she taught at the Tampa Actors School.
In addition to her husband and daughter, survivors include her son Todd, sister Marilyn and grandchildren Hannah, Rachel and Avery.
