SS Lansdowne, a Grand Trunk car ferry, crossing the Detroit river in the winter. The ship, named for Canada’s governor general at the time, Henry Petty‑Fitzmaurice, Marquess of Lansdowne, was commissioned by the Grand Trunk Railway and built by the Detroit Dry Dock Co. It had pilot houses at both ends and a set of parallel railroad tracks, which could accommodate up to six railroad cars, with as many as 300 passengers. 1905
