Rick Barber, overnight Denver radio fixture for 30 years, dead at 67

By Joanne Ostrow

Rick Barber, a fixture in local radio for three decades, died Friday morning following complications as a result of ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 67.
His voice kept company with countless insomniacs in Colorado and beyond for 30 years on "The Rick Barber Show." The show was an institution on KOA (850 AM) from 1982 until hesigned off in early 2012, a victim of Clear Channel downsizing.
In a press release, his son Ian Barber said his father was "a facilitator of topics and education — that's what his show was all about. He always considered his show a radio magazine, and not just a talk show. Dad loved his listeners."
Barber started with KOA in 1982 in the old Channel 4 building, where he did an overnight radio-TV simulcast. Over the years he appeared on Denver TV as well. He talked with the Post about hisproblems with ALS and financesin April.
Reflecting on his career in his last interview, Barber said, "my footprint should be somebody who made you laugh, made you feel comfortable, made you feel good. That's how I want to be remembered. I want them [the audience] to think of me as the guy who did it my way. Including going out: my way."
Barber is remembered by the family as a passionate supporter of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, a devoted teacher of journalism and an avid Beatles and jazz fan.
Funeral services are pending. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be sent in Rick's name and memory to theALS Association, Rocky Mountain chapter.
