Bai Jing was found dead at her home in Beijing's Chaoyang district by police on Tuesday.
Her husband, Zhou Chenghai, 44, thought to be responsible for her death, committed suicide, according to reports in the Chinese state media.
Mrs Bai starred in Kung Fu Wing Chun as well as a dozen other movies, and was praised as a possible heir to Michelle Yeoh, until now China's best-known female kung fu star.
According to the Legal Evening News, a Chinese newspaper, Mrs Bai had filed for divorce from Mr Zhou, who received the summons on Tuesday morning, and returned home to confront his wife.
The divorce petition allegedly stated that she was unaware Mr Zhou had a previous marriage and a son, and accused him of infidelity.
According to Ju Chunlei, an entertainment agent in Beijing, the couple's marriage had been strained for some time, and Mr Zhou had been hit by his mother's death earlier this year. Police are investigating the case.
China's National People's Congress will consider another attempt at legislating against domestic violence when it meets next week, according to the China Daily newspaper.
Almost a quarter of Chinese women have experienced domestic abuse, according to the All China Women's Federation.
