Richard Journo is an artist based in Rome and London. His work builds on the digital research of codes and their applications through digital processes, which are themselves based on the manipulation of basic codes.
It is with codes (religious, mathematical, commercial etc.) that human beings are able, on one hand, to communicate with each other and, on the other, distinguish and separate themselves from others. It is this apparent paradox that Journo wants to explore. His works extends from the historical research of code-breakers and cryptographers, to the development of his own colour code. He also explores bar codes and, by applying them to various images with an encrypted message, Journo is able to ask pointed political and sociological questions..
The exhibition in Rome features, amongst other works of political relevance, an installation where the viewer, literally ‘entering’ a barcode, will be placed in the uncomfortable position of a voyeur.
The exhibition at the Atrium Gallery in London presents two series of works: one focused on the long history of code making and code breaking, the other centered on the elaboration of a new code based on an alpha numeric colour code.
Richard Journo’s works are in private and corporate collections in USA, Norway and Italy.
