In 2014 CCA Łaźnia has realized several projects in the framework of THE OUTDOOR GALLERY OF THE CITY OF GDANSK. One of them was "WHEN IS A NEIGHBOR A STRANGER?" project which consisted of a seminar on art in public space and interventions in public space of Lower Town district.
It presented works focusing on strategies and opportunities for audience involvement in art pieces realized outside of the confined gallery space. Since art has become an indelible part of our cityscapes, appearing almost literally on our doorsteps we posed the questions: Do we see it as a pleasant neighbor or rather as a stranger speaking with a funny accent? What should art of this kind be like? Should it entertain, criticize or raise doubts?
The Lower Town, in spite of its rich history, is perceived as a “dark” and dangerous place. By the series of monthly city wanderings entitled "LOWER TOWN TALKS" we tried to change the way the quarter is perceived. The tours were held once a month and each had its special theme.
Artists and musicians representing alternative scene were also invited to perform in public space of The Lower Town. By these events called "LOWER TOWN LIVE" held in untypical places, outside gallery walls we created places aimed at stimulating encounters of the local community. The project’s aim was to break the barriers and to introduce the district as a friendly, attractive place and to encourage local citizens’ participation.
"TOPOLOGIE" project realized by les gens d’Uterpan dealt with unities of space, time and action that make up a performance. For several days the performers left a predefined point of departure to go out into the public space, following an individual itinerary. Each time they went out, they entered progressively into the organization and increasingly precise replica of their simple acts: gestures and physical movements, social behavior, the speed of their movements.
